What To Wear For Your Session

What you wear plays a big role in how your images feel, and this guide is here to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully, feel comfortable, and truly look like you. These are gentle guidelines, not strict rules. If you ever feel unsure, I’m always happy to help!
Overall Style & Color Guidance
Keep it soft, natural, and timeless
Choose neutral and earth-toned colors such as cream, beige, tan, soft browns, olive, sage, muted blues, rust, and warm grays. These tones photograph beautifully and allow the focus to stay on connection and emotion rather than what you’re wearing. If you’re unsure, think about the colors you’d naturally find outdoors; these colors tend to feel the most cohesive and age gracefully in your photos.
Colors to avoid
At the same time, try to avoid anything overly bold or distracting. Very bright, neon, or heavily saturated colors can pull attention away from you, and outfits that are entirely black or white may lose detail or appear a bit harsh on camera. Strong contrasts between colors can also draw the eye away from faces, so keeping things balanced and soft will help everything come together in a more natural, flattering way.

Patterns, Logos, & Graphics

It’s best to keep patterns and graphics minimal. Logos, words, characters, and large designs can be distracting and often date your photos over time. Busy patterns like tight stripes, bold florals, or loud prints can pull focus away from connection and emotion. Instead, opt for subtle textures like knits, linen, denim, or soft ribbing. These add visual interest in a more natural, timeless way without overwhelming the image.

Fit & Comfort (Very Important)
Fit and comfort matter more than anything. The way your clothing moves and feels will directly affect how natural and relaxed you look in your photos. Choose pieces that allow you to sit, walk, and move with ease: nothing too tight, stiff, or restrictive. If something needs constant adjusting, pulls in certain areas, or rides up, it can quickly become distracting during your session. The more comfortable you feel, the more effortless everything will look.
It’s also important to think about coverage. I recommend avoiding anything that feels overly revealing or shifts easily, like tops that require frequent readjustment or show more than you’d like when moving. Some poses can change how an outfit sits, and the goal is always for you to feel confident, secure, and fully present. When you’re not thinking about your clothing, it allows the focus to stay on genuine moments and connection.
Footwear & Accessories (Very Important)
Footwear and accessories should feel just as effortless as the rest of your outfit. Neutral shoes like brown, tan, nude, or soft white tend to photograph best and blend seamlessly into the overall look. Unless your session is intentionally very casual, it’s best to skip athletic sneakers. When it comes to accessories, keep things simple and intentional. Delicate jewelry works beautifully, and while scarves, hats, or light layers can add a bit of depth, they should complement your outfit rather than take attention away from you.

Coordinating for Families & Couples

For couples and families, the goal is to coordinate rather than match exactly. Choose a shared color palette of two to four tones and build each outfit within that range. Mixing textures and shades creates a more natural, layered look than everyone wearing the same color. It also helps to keep everyone within a similar level of formality, whether that’s more casual or slightly elevated, so everything feels cohesive.

Final Tips

Before your session, take a little time to try everything on and move around in it so you know it feels right. Steaming or ironing your clothing can make a subtle but meaningful difference in how polished everything looks on camera. If you’re unsure between two outfits, feel free to bring both or send them my way; I’m always happy to help you decide.
Above all, my goal is for your photos to feel natural, comfortable, and timeless. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it truly shows, and that’s where the magic happens.
